StormMinder Releases Power Potential

December 2, 2002

Leading on-line power system dynamics company Psymetrix today launched StormMinder PDM, the second generation of a customisable new range of Power Dynamics Management (PDM) applications developed to help power companies solve the problem of how to improve transmission and generation performance. With StormMinder PDM, Psymetrix promises that performance improvements of up to 50% could be seen -- without unnecessary capital expenditure.

Using on-line dynamics measurements acquired directly and non-invasively, StormMinder PDM applications give power companies unique real-time decision-making capabilities, enabling them to release locked-in transmission and generation capacity while simultaneously improving reliability and efficiency.

"StormMinder PDM is our second generation of Power Dynamics Management applications, and is the result of extensive work with power companies around the world," said Dr. Jos Trehern, Chief Executive of Psymetrix. "The first generation has been tested and refined through rigorous day to day use. We have now built on this proven and robust technology to provide even more extensive functionality across a wider range of areas."

The powerful and flexible new Psymetrix StormMinder platform is a fully scaleable and easily integrated and supported enterprise-wide solution that harnesses the revolutionary real-time dynamics measurement technology pioneered in the first generation PDM system and channels it into a range of new application areas.

PDM applications are now available in a number of packaged solutions that have been tailored to the specific requirements of different power industry users, in areas such as Operations and Strategic Planning. The new StormMinder PDM application range also gives customers the option of a full migration path. Packages range from off-line entry level systems allowing users to perform surveys and investigate power system dynamics through to on-line systems for use in fine-tuning of damping devices, and on to multi-node, multi-user on-line security monitoring systems with sophisticated alarm and reporting facilities.

Several new application packages currently in the final stages of development will shortly be added to the range, including a ground-breaking real-time solution to the problem of determining increased secure power transfer levels.

"Essentially, PDM helps create some order in the very turbulent environment of power generation and transmission dynamics, " said Dr. Trehern. "The consequences of making wrong decisions in this area can be so grave that traditional approaches to solving problems in this environment have necessarily led to a very conservative and cautious approach to managing performance levels.

"To all intents and purposes, power companies have been flying blind when it comes to managing dynamics performance and this has imposed artificial constraints on the industry which, in some cases, has resulted in companies operating well under their real safe operational levels. By giving companies real-time operational information, StormMinder PDM applications enable companies to work with limits based on direct performance measurements rather than theoretical simulations, paving the way for them to improve their efficiency, performance -- and profits. With the first generation PDM we have already seen power companies improve transmission performance by 50%!"
