On 9 September 2009, Psymetrix was awarded a contract to supply pioneering energy operator Energinet.dk of Denmark with the PhasorPoint Wide-Area Monitoring System (WAMS) and advanced phasor applications platform. As Denmark pushes Europe to even better achievements in renewable energy targets, its growing proportion of wind power (20 % at present) means inevitable fluctuations on the power grid. The new WAMS platform will allow Energinet.dk to better manage and control this unpredictability.
Energinet.dk has the highest proportions of wind power of any operator in the world, and aims to generate a massive 50% of its power from wind by 2025. Consequently, WAMS technology has been under investigation at Energinet.dk for some time, as part of an overall plan to build a power system that is both intelligent and flexible. Now more than ever, the Energinet.dk System Operator requires a detailed picture of system performance in the Nordic region at all times, ensuring energy fluctuations are managed effectively and blackouts prevented.
When Energinet.dk first embarked on what was to be an extensive research process to find a Smart Grid applications provider, it cast the net wide. Psymetrix, with its growing international reputation and recent experience with the Icelandic transmission system operator (also integrating renewables into its grid), was invited to participate. An extensive pre-purchase evaluation of the Psymetrix PhasorPoint system was carried out, as Dr. Douglas Wilson, Chief Technical Officer at Psymetrix explains:
“PhasorPoint had already been extensively and successfully tested by other customers, but the Energinet.dk testing, as expected of such an ambitious operator, was the most rigorous of all.”
Against formidable international competition Psymetrix was tested and passed with flying colours, as Martin Lundø-Nielsen, Project Manager, Relation Management at Energinet.dk clarifies:
“We chose Psymetrix because of their product, future development and ability to integrate with our existing systems. By this time next year we expect to double the number of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) we have in place, so we needed a technology (and a company) that could evolve.”
“We like the PhasorPoint user interface, because it shows our System Operator just the relevant headline data, giving him critical information exactly when he needs it, but avoiding information overload.”
And Psymetrix are equally enthusiastic about their future work with Energinet.dk. Dr. Jos Trehern, Chief Executive of Psymetrix adds:
“We are delighted to be working with Energinet.dk, one of the most widely respected, innovative and influential energy operators in Europe, indeed the world. This is a partner we can both learn from and grow with, and the winning of this contract reinforces our strength in the market as a proven supplier of end-to-end Smart Grid applications and technology.”
“And as a result of this collaboration a number of new PhasorPoint features and applications will shortly be released.”
