WAMS Design and Deployment
Conventional SCADA systems are limited to steady-state measurements and cannot be used for observing system dynamics. Synchronised phasor measurement devices such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), however, are now a proven technology. providing accurate time-stamped measurement data suitable for observing power system dynamics.
The deployment of PMU devices to provide data acquisition in Wide-Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) brings a whole range of new issues far removed from traditional SCADA/EMS. Data transmission rates and data volumes are substantially higher. However, unfamiliarity with the range of WAMS building blocks, visualisation options and advanced applications can result in poor system choices and the deployment of under performing and unreliable systems.
